A playful twist on exercise, the new fitness trail at Byron Bay State High School is always bustling with activity. With the aim to reinvigorate bodies and minds outside of the classroom, the design was inspired by a military style obstacle course that cleverly incorporates ninja-style challenges. Students jump, crawl, twist, climb and balance as they challenge both their bodies and minds as they make their way across the course.
The start of the ninja fitness-style course are alternate jump steps. Using the momentum and power from their legs and arms students brace for an almighty jump from one step to another. Next up, the monkey bars, where students use their upper body strength across the obstacle. More daring students can climb to the top where they bear-crawl across the bars to the next obstacle.
Following is the Turbo Twister, where they put their timing, cross-body coordination and strength to the test. The four dynamic wheels twist and turn in response to their movement making it a physical challenge to stay on and a mental challenge to not give up!
A fitness station provides students with numerous activities that cater to various fitness levels. A decline bench helps to strengthen lower back and core muscles with leg lifts and sit ups. Horizontal bars, pull up bars and a push up station provide a range of activities to develop upper strength to help students tackle the obstacle course. The cleverly placed bars at differing heights determine difficulty levels for each user.
Towards the end of the ninja fitness course, an agility trail offers a balance, coordination and logical thinking challenge. Balancing ropes, twisted climbing obstacles, wobbling bridges, ninja rope steppers and climbing nets – the agility trail challenges even the fittest of ninja’s.
Other elements of the trail are over and under bars, quick step pods and a zig zagged balance beam. The custom designed ninja fitness trail is a massive success with the students.
