Westfield North Lakes Playground | Urban Play

Kids of all ages will be begging to visit Westfield North Lakes after the recent unveiling of their brand new, ‘under the sea’ themed outdoor play area. The state-of-the-art children’s playground is part of an $80 million upgrade and boasts fully customised, revolutionary play equipment, the first of its kind in Queensland shopping centres.

The playground’s free flowing design features play opportunities for children of all ages including a digitally interactive SMART structure, toddler play piece, ocean themed seesaw and Queensland’s first 9 metre custom tower to be installed in a shopping centre.

Westfield has worked closely with Brisbane based playground design company Urban Play, to create a bespoke approach to adventure play within the unique shopping environment.

With a focus on patterns, colours and functionality, Westfield designers drew inspiration from the coral shelves, mangrove colonies, sand bars and marine life that inhabit the neighbouring Moreton Bay environment.

‘Our clear design intention was to establish a sculptural beacon for the playground to attraction families to the area’ said Urban Play designer Stacey Hack. ‘This was achieved through the height, placement and wow factor of the unique ‘under the sea’ tower which can be viewed on approach to the popular Westfield destination’ said Mrs Hack.

The playgrounds centerpiece, a bespoke Corocord Majestic Tower, has been fully customized to reflect the projects ‘under the sea’ theme which stems from a wavy rubber softfall design and feature vibrant green circular levels that mimic coral shelves while giant fish figures explore the open seas from atop the 9 metre ocean spires.

The playground also features the first digitally interactive play unit to be installed in a Queensland shopping centre. The Little Mermaid and Ugly Duckling unit combines age appropriate physical challenges with a full digital package of fairy tales and virtual games. Supporting learning and education in a fun environment the unit provides an interactive platform for parents to extend the learning experience into the everyday home.
