Located along the Fitzroy Riverbank is the new and bespoke Fitzroy Adventure Playground. As part of the $36 million upgrade for the Rockhampton Riverbank, the Rockhampton Regional Council wanted to deliver a playground that would be a drawcard for the region and cherished for generations to come.
Working alongside Urbis, Woollams Construction and the Rockhampton Regional Council, Urban Play delivered a playground with play elements for children of all ages and one that pushed the boundaries of playground design and innovation.
Taking into consideration the potential of flooding, this iconic playground is set high on an embankment that is decorated with a custom rubber design in shades of green. The design ties in with the rest of the Riverbank Precincts innovative architecture.
The embankment is adorned with orange rubber climbing domes, beige and green mountaineering ropes and green climbing cleats that make for a fun and challenging climb up the embankment to the tree-house styled sky cabins.
Sitting 7 metres above ground, are the custom-designed Sky Cabins that offer a breath-taking view of the Rockhampton Riverbank that has never been seen before. Decorated in the same pattern that is weaved throughout the riverbank, the brown and green sky cabins allow children to experience the thrill of heights safely. Night-time adventure is possible with lighting throughout the Sky Cabins and Sky Walk.
Entry into the Treehouse Cabins can be made by climbing the 4 meter high, specially-designed Corocord Octanet which can then be followed by an exciting slide down one of the two humongous stainless steel slides. For younger adventurers, there is a designated play area with a KOMPAN Mega Tower Play Structure, Spinner Bowl and specially-designed Crocodile and Shark See Saw .
Mayor Strelow from the Rockhampton Council said that “We are very excited to bring what we believe is North Queensland’s best playground to the families of our Region.” Since opening, the playground has been a massive hit with the Rockhampton community and is full of endless running, laughter, climbing and squeals of delight.
