A guide to Inclusive Playgrounds

Posted on 19.10.2017 in Children's development , Products

Play is enriched by others and making our playgrounds inclusive to all, everyone is equal, welcome and capable of enjoying the space regardless of ability. This allows children, families and communities to enjoy the social experience of playing together.

Our mission is to create new worlds that encourage physical, sensory and social play. One that provides access to appropriate levels of challenge and promotes a sense of adventure.

Our supply partner, KOMPAN has always fostered a philosophy of inclusion, meaning that the vast majority of KOMPAN products are made so that all users can benefit from the play equipment on their individual terms.

Urban Play’s 5 Design Principles for Inclusive Design

1. Every Mind and Every Body
Regardless of age, nationality, gender, religious beliefs, physical and intellectual abilities, children have the right to play with others.

2.Safe But Not limiting
Providing a safe area for kids to explore is important but creating a space that challenges through self-managed risk assessment and perceived independence is equally as important. The aim is to excite over and over again.

3. Sensory Stimulation
Multi-Sensory consideration in design include colour, sound, texture, movement and versatile activities. A principle of KOMPAN’s universal design is multi-functionality; meaning combinations can be used in a variety of different ways.

4. Accessibility
While ramps and accessible stairs provide access to elevated levels for the physically challenged, every mind needs access to activities like swinging, sliding, climbing, rocking and spinning that will help essential cognitive development. Importantly, they need access so kids can play together.

5. Diversity of Play
A well designed play destination is one that encourages a community to come together. Providing shade, seating and undercover areas creates a retreat for passive play opportunities and encourages development of social skills.

In these principles we ensure our designs challenge physical, social, creative, cogitative and emotional competences within all playground users. To design a custom playground in your area, please contact 07 3256 0554 or visit here.
